Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner, The Boss, Dies
Today marks the passing of long time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
The Boss.
That’s right, The Boss died.
Sure, Bruce Springsteen is “The Boss” — but he’s not really a boss. George Steinbrenner was a boss. He was firing people when Donald Trump was in diapers. He fired former manager Billy Martin FIVE TIMES. I’m sure the fifth time was just because Martin was dumb enough to come back yet again.
He bought the Yankees in 1973 for $8.7 mil. That’s about the cost of a ticket, three beers and a burrito at a Yankee game today. That’s the work of a powerful boss.
Sadly, none of us worked for the boss. According to CNBC sports/money guru Darren Rovell, Steinbrenner dished out $1.87 BILLION in payroll since 2000.
No matter what you thought of Steinbrenner, he likely had some impact on your life. He made the Yankees a dominant worldwide sports franchise. His bravado lives in the spirit of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.
George Costanza hid from him under his desk, introduced him to Pizano’s calzones and tricked him into thinking he was burning the midnight oil. (OK, it was Larry David, but it was still Steinbrenner)
So, although none of us are Yankee fans, we still tip the cap today to George Steinbrenner, The Boss. Rest in peace.
