Volunteer Fired For Attending Prom
It’s pretty tough to get fired from a job you’re volunteering to do.
But even non paying gigs are riddled with occupational hazards, especially if you’re working with kids.
This morning Melissa Bowerman, a volunteer track coach at an Oregon high school, is out of her job this morning for crossing a pretty obvious line:
Melissa Bowerman made the odd choice to go to prom with one of the 17-year-old boys she coaches, because she felt bad that he didn’t have a date and he’d been doing poorly in his English class.
Some lucky kid went from failing in class and with girls to taking the track coach to prom. He should definitely net the “Most Improved” senior superlative.
As for Bowerman, what was she thinking? She told us:
If they go on (academic) probation and suspension, then they can’t go to the track meets. I said, “OK, I will go with you, but we’ve got to talk about English first. You’re going to do better in English.”
Seems innocent, but still stupid — even if the kid’s father did co-sign the idea, saying Bowerman is like a “surrogate mom.” Momma swears nothing went on, just some slow dances and ping pong/foosball. It probably would have been all good without the slow dances.
The 41-year-old coach is the daughter-in-law of Bill Bowerman, a co-founder of Nike. Yes, daughter-in-law, which means she’s married. The lucky guy is 73-year-old fellow coach Joe.
And Joe is pissed. He’s threatening to resign and even move away from the school they helped build into a “powerhouse program.”
Another occupational hazard we would think is assumed, but clearly isn’t.
