The Passive-Aggressive Windows Hourglass
I consider myself a relatively calm person in the office when things do not go exactly as planned. However, no matter how hard I try, the Windows Hourglass always makes my blood boil.
Yesterday I had to deal with an email that had extremely large attachments. Any time I accidentally clicked on the email, my email client would immediately throw up the Windows hourglass while it tried to load.
The hourglass stayed on the screen indefinitely. That was until I was forced to ctrl-alt-delete everything.
It is year 2010 and the hourglass is more of a novelty item than a tool that actual provides an update on loading time. I mean come on, scientists have created the Large Hadron Collider, also known as the “God Machine,” and I can’t get an estimated time to open an email? Something is seriously wrong here.
With Windows XP being the software of choice for most large corporations, why hasn’t Windows tried to update the hourglass? Rather than have it sit on my screen testing my sanity, why can’t it tell me straight up, “What you are trying to do is impossible.”
I’m not losing sleep over it, but it’d be greatly appreciated.
Until then, I will continue to smash my mouse on my desk a little harder and harder each hourglass until I need a replacement.
