TCS True Life – I Got a Virus at Work

0

Hello, my name is Reply All and I am recovering from a computer virus at work. Embarrassing, I know.

Lunch was over and decided I had enough time to look into Jose Reyes’ status. Now ladies, before you start to think I’m browsing some inappropriate content, Jose Reyes is the shortstop for the New York Mets. This is fantasy baseball talk. Drafting him may have been my first mistake (things are looking up) but the unwanted gift called “Antivirus 2010″ was much, much worse. The all encompassing corporate anti-virus software was somewhere else, taking a nap. It didn’t help and that’s when the frustration began.

So here’s a quick summary of this very intrusive virus:

Antivirus 2010 is a rogue anti-spyware program from the same family as Antivirus 2008 and Antivirus 2009. Like its previous incarnations, Antivirus 2010 is advertised through the use of advertisements on the Web pretending to be online anti-malware scanners. These advertisements pretend to scan your computer and then state that your computer is infected and that you should download and install Antivirus 2010 to remove these infections. These rogues are also known to be advertised and installed through Trojans that display fake security alerts in your Windows taskbar stating you are infected. Once you click on one of these alerts, it will bring you to the download page for Antivirus 2010, or even download and install it without your permission.

This screen almost caused a death by falling computer from window.

One minute I’m reading a Baseball News site that appears to be safe, and the next minute my computer is completely hi-jacked. Couldn’t do anything for the rest of the day. Talk about anger issues. I was very close to losing it. After I spent the afternoon researching and allowing the work to pile up, I found this great tutorial. It saved my life and I’ve been clean ever since.

I consider myself somewhat computer savvy and I still contracted this gem. It ruined my day and I won’t let it ruin yours. If you see this screen at any time, follow the tutorial above before it’s too late.
