Sprint Store Workers Fired After Nabbing Suspected Thief
Veteran Sprint store employees Paul Shoemaker and Mike McGee were heading for their daily break.
The pair was walking out of the store in a Denver-area shopping center when a security guard from the nearby Apple store shouted for someone to stop a suspected thief. The pair took off and actually tracked down the suspect and subdued him. Officials soon came, and the pair filled out reports and went back to work.
According to the Denver Westword blog, word got out and the pair received the proper props.
Then they received an email from corporate asking for details. They then found out Sprint has a policy that employees should stay free and clear of shoplifting incidents. But it wasn’t in the Sprint store. No problem, right?
The next day, Shoemaker and McGee were called in to separate meetings, where they were told that their Sprint days were over. “They didn’t really tell us anything,” Shoemaker says. “They didn’t let us know where they were coming from. They just said, ‘We looked into it further, and you’re fired.’ They labeled it a form of misconduct.”
Ouch. I can understand that policy. The last thing Sprint needs is for an employee to snap a leg in half while chasing a thief. Lawsuits, disability, etc. But it’s really an occupational hazard to be a Good Samaritan on your work break?
According to the blog, neither have stated intentions of suing for wrongful termination. WHY NOT?
My job clearly doesn’t want me sleeping on the clock, but if I catch a few Zs on my break — I’m not getting fired. Doesn’t the same logic apply?
What’s the moral of this story? Doing the right thing gets you fired (if you’re a Sprint employee). That sounded so bitter.

I know this has nothing to do with this article, but maybe slightly since I am a Sprint customer. Like all people Im sure youve recieved wrong calls on your cell phone. I just saw I missed an unknown number who had left me a message, upon listening to the message I discovered one Wanda Collins had received an Omaha Steaks gift package of 25 steaks and they were looking for a verification that she had received them. This was a first usually a wrong number is somebody on the other line I can barely underdstand, this time I was a possible reciepent of some sweet steaks…darn that got me excited and let down at the same time, I wish I came home to a 25 steak gift!
You should have called back and told them you didn’t get them and gave them your address for a reship!
BTW — What kind of party is Wanda throwing with 25 steaks? I want to be at that party.
