Rational MLB Pitcher Kicks Chair, Breaks Toe

He's volatile.

There are very few occupations that have a “disabled list” or “injured reserve.”

Professional sports do. It’s tough season of physical labor, and while the rewards are high, so are the hazards. It’s rare athletes can make it through a season without sustaining some form of injury. In football, any play can result in something going really wrong. In basketball, your ankles can roll at any second.

In baseball, you can crash into a wall or get hit in the head by a 95 mph fastball.

But for Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ryan Madson, he found himself on the disabled list after needing surgery for kicking a chair in fustration and breaking a toe.

Madson injured the toe after he blew a save Wednesday in San Francisco. He said he slipped walking down a flight of stairs leading from the dugout to the clubhouse. He then kicked a metal folding chair. He said he felt like he stubbed his toe, but realized it was worse when he woke up Thursday morning and had difficulty walking.

How could any of that ended well? I’ve played sports my whole life, and I’m even known for sometimes ratcheting up the intensity a little too much. But can we use come common sense? Aren’t there enough occupational hazards when you take the field?

Next time, use one of the many tools around you to vent your anger, Ryan.
