Glassdoor.com — Know What Others Are Making

1

As I stated last week, I’m furiously looking for a new job. I’ve sent out so many applications, there all starting to blur together. But there’s one, annoying question that sticks out like a sore thumb:

Requested salary

Can we talk about this in person? How am I supposed to know if I’m listing too much? What if I list $15,000 less than what you’re willing to pay me? Am I screwing myself? I really hate this question.

I was looking for answers, and McFly dropped one of the most awesome Web sites I’ve ever been to: Glassdoor.com.

Type in a company or job title and you’ll get company reviews and salaries from people who have worked there, or currently work there. How amazing is that?

Last time I let an Apple employee be snarky to me.

If you don’t register with the site, you’ll have limited access. But if you provide information about your job or former employer, you gain more access to he site. The best part? It’s all anonymous.

Because it’s indeed anonymous, I wouldn’t take everything on the site as gospel, but it’s a great benchmark tool. I’ve felt a lot better filling out that dreaded field after browsing around on Glassdoor.com.

The biggest problem? I realized I’m severely underpaid.

Wow – that site is pretty awesome and could have changed my life if I knew about it a few years ago. Now? I’m old and crotchety. But seriously – salary negotiations as they are currently conducted (imho) punish the honest and scrupulous, which is bad for employees and employers alike. Build long-term value with transparency! I kind of hate me for typing that sentence.
